Exciting Dunedin Hospital work opportunities
The single biggest hospital build ever in New Zealand is planned to take place in Dunedin by 2026 ‑ a new $1.4 billion, state of the art public hospital rising in the central city. Hospital facilities needed now are coming on line in the current hospital, too, the highlight being a new $14.8million intensive care unit.
Setting the standard for the new hospital, stage one of the ICU – Te Puna Wai Ora – Southern Critical Care – opening March 2019. Equipped with the most modern equipment of any such unit in New Zealand, it represents a great leap forward for critical care in the Southern district and staff for positions in the new unit are being sought in this new era.
Stage Two is scheduled to open in mid-2019, allowing the current hospital’s six-bed High Dependency Unit to relocate there. This will help to create an integrated, spacious flexible work area where specialist teams can care for the sickest patients in one location.
An emphasis on patient privacy, noise reduction and control of light levels and ready access to natural light has been included in the design to help speed patient recovery through improved peace and tranquillity combined with much better environmental control.
The new hospital design will reflect the constant evolution of modern health systems supporting new models of care, looking to serve the Otago community for 50 years after completion.
Covering two inner-city blocks, a project of this magnitude in central Dunedin will have a big impact on the CBD, creating many opportunities for the community. At its peak, there will be up to 1,000 workers on site, generating work for building professionals at all levels and supporting services.
It’s an exciting prospect and one that the city is preparing for with care, enthusiasm and pride.
