The Dunedin Railway Station has been a city icon since 1906 and is considered by many to be New Zealand’s most photographed building.
Once a bustling domestic train line, today the station is a major tourist and heritage destination in our city and is home to Dunedin Railways, Otago Art Society’s gallery, the Otago Farmers Market, and Cobb & Co restaurant.
Dunedin Railways
Explore Dunedin and its surrounds with heritage train journeys departing from the Dunedin Railway Station. Cross the beautiful Royal Doulton mosaic tiles in the atrium before climbing aboard the train for an iconic and scenic trip. New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame
New Zealand's greatest sports performers, their most memorable moments, the trophies and the tools of their trades - all come dramatically alive when you visit the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame in the Dunedin Railway Station.
Walk among the displays and exhibits that salute the inducted champions and their contributions to New Zealand's renowned sporting heritage. See their uniforms, equipment, trophies and medals which tell the stories of their achievements on the world stage.
Otago Art Society
The Otago Art Society is the first art society to be established in New Zealand, and operates on the first floor of the historic Dunedin Railway Station. Here you will find a gift shop, the permanent collection and four galleries.
It holds regular exhibitions of artist members’ work, as well as corporate sponsored exhibitions open to artists further afield within New Zealand. All are open for public viewing.
Cobb & Co
Cobb & Co is a New Zealand institution. The Dunedin restaurant serves up its iconic, family-friendly fare within the historic railway station.

Otago Farmers Market
The Otago Farmers Market has become a Dunedin icon and must-do for visitors.

iD Dunedin Fashion Show
The city's iconic fashion week culminates at the Dunedin Railway Station with its two major runway events famously held on the station's platform.
Every two years the station becomes a beacon for fashionistas when it transforms to host the iD International Emerging Designer Awards and the iD Dunedin Fashion Show.
Architect George Troup, nicknamed “Gingerbread George” for his building style, was tendered to design the Dunedin Railway Station in 1903.
The foyer’s mosaic floor depicts a railway engine and other motifs, and the stained-glass windows show locomotives. Ticket boxes set in tile arches and a grand central entrance hall brought an air of luxury to many rail travellers.
Today the Dunedin Railway Station is listed as a Category 1 Historic Place for Heritage New Zealand for its civic, art and architectural significance to Dunedin and New Zealand history and has even been used in Hollywood films, such as the Oscar-winning The Power of the Dog.
